The Ku-ring-gai area was home to the Darramurragal or Darug people for thousands of years before the European settlers arrived. The Darug people lived mostly along the coastline, fishing and hunting in the waters and harvesting food from the surrounding bush. Through their connection to country, they developed a rich culture with their own language, customs, spirituality and law. Their deep connection to the land enabled them to thrive amongst their natural surroundings.
Languages, stories and customs were all passed down orally from generation to generation. Devastatingly much of the rich culture of the Ku-ring-gai area is unknown as a result of the rapid loss within the Aboriginal community at the time of invasion.
Aboriginal Sites
Ku-ring-gai is abundant with Aboriginal sites, with close to 6500 sites in metropolitan Sydney. The sites include rock art, shell middens, axe grinding grooves, ceremonial grounds, burial sites, stone quarries, fish traps and water holes.
Many of these sites can be seen on the walking tracks throughout Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. There’s a fabulous walk called the Aboriginal Heritage Walk which highlights the best of the Aboriginal art, combining Resolute and West Head walking tracks. Head to the links below for more details about this walk.
