As we get older, our bone density decreases, placing us at risk of developing osteopenia and osteoporosis, increasing our risk of fractures. Healthy Bones Australia state that over 1 million Australians have osteoporosis, and each year 173 000 broken bones are due to poor bone health.
Research has shown that exercise plays an important role in maintaining bone health and preventing bone loss. Different exercises including weight bearing impact loading exercises, such as jogging, and resistance training support healthy bones. Our Bone Strengthening group incorporates a range of exercises, personalised to you, to maintain and improve your bone health.
Before joining one of our group sessions you are required to have an assessment with one of our physiotherapists. During the Bone Strengthening assessment the physiotherapist will take a detailed history of any medical or musculoskeletal issues you may have. You will then have a full musculoskeletal assessment where we will assess your mobility, strength and stability as well as providing education and basic exercises. The Bone Strengthening assessment is a requirement to claim your classes under your private health fund. It is also to ensure the physiotherapist running the group session knows about you and your history and can ensure exercises given are safe and appropriate.
